The Rampage finally return home after a 2 and a half week, 7 game road trip. Last night, the Rampage dropped a hard fought 1-0 decision to these same Barons up in Oklahoma City. The Rampage tightened defensively and played a very conservative game due to the team being without 5 of it's top 6 forwards. After 2+ periods of scoreless action, Ryan Keller would score the lone goal of the contest midway through the 3rd period. Barons goaltender (and former Rampage netminder) David Leneveau would make a couple of big saves in the final two minutes to preserve the win and the shutout.
Just minutes before the game last night, the Florida Panthers made a trade with in state rival Tampa Bay. The Panthers sent Defensemen Evan Oberg and Mike Kostka to the Lightning. In return, the Panthers, and by default the Rampage, received Center James Wright and Defenseman Mike Vernace. This was a trade of necessity for the Rampage. I believe they gave up more overall talent right now, but in return, they got the player with the highest upside in Wright and filled a position of need (C) by trading away at a position of strength and depth (D). I wouldn't be surprised to see Wright slotted into the #1 line at Center tonight.
This Rampage team, in it's current state, is going to need to continue to play a conservative offensive game and really focus on keeping the other team off the scoreboard. They need to pack it in defensively and hope for opposing teams to make mistakes that might lead to scoring chances. It will, in all likelihood, be frustrating to watch. But with all the talent we have injured or playing for the Panthers, it's really the only choice they have. They just don't have the offensive firepower to run and gun with any team in the AHL. (How familiar does all of this sound?)
Hope to see a good crowd tonight welcoming the boys back home. Until faceoff, LETS GO RAMPAGE!!
