It's here. The final weekend. The biggest weekend in San Antonio's ten year history. Three points earns a playoff spot with zero help from other teams. The Rampage will play 3 games in 3 nights, all against division rivals, with an opportunity to lock up the team's first playoff spot in 4 years and just it's 3rd in franchise history.
Tonight, the hated Texas Stars come to town. Yes, they are in last place. No, they should not be overlooked. They have 3 new players, signed after their respective college and junior seasons ended, including Hobey Baker finalist Austin Smith and 1st round draft pick goalie Jack Campbell. They also recently got several players back from Dallas when the Stars were eliminated from the NHL playoffs.
The Stars top line of Fraser-Morin-Vincour has pretty much destroyed the Rampage this season, putting up 28 points in 11 games. To counter, the B-B-M line has put up 24 points. The wildcard players could be former Rampage forward Angelo Esposito, who has scored 5 points in 5 games against the Rampage since being traded to the Stars, and former Star Greg Rallo who has scored 7 points (4-3) in the last 5 meetings.
Rampage goalie Jacob Markstrom has been a legit top goalie in the league since coming back from Florida in Mid-February. In 15 games since returning, Markstrom has gone 9-4-1-1 with a 1.91 GAA and a .942 save %. He's allowed just 29 goals in those 15 games. Those are "Best goalie in the league" numbers over that stretch.
The Rampage can clinch a berth tonight under two scenarios:
1) Regulation W vs. Texas AND a Rochester loss (reg/OT/SO) vs. Syracuse AND a Lake Erie loss (reg/OT/SO) vs. Hamilton AND a Peoria loss (reg/OT/SO) or regulation win vs. Charlotte
2) Shootout W vs. Texas AND a Rochester loss (reg/OT/SO) vs. Syracuse AND a Lake Erie loss (reg/OT/SO) vs. Hamilton AND Peoria vs. Charlotte finishes in regulation
There's a rumor that tonight might approach a sellout. The guys are talking about it on twitter and the buzz is in the air. Let's show up tonight and tear the house down. There would be nothing sweeter than beating the rival Stars, on home ice, with a playoff spot on the line.
Today, I leave with this:
LET'S GO RAMPAGE!!!
