San Antonio Rampage Report Card - 2nd Quarter Grades

It's time for the 2Q grades now that we are just past the halfway point of this AHL season. Same format as last time. Only change being the 1Q stats and grades are in parenthesis.

Enjoy and feel free to pick them apart:

Goalies

#1 Grumet-Morris, Dov  3-3-0-0  2.23GAA  .924%  (2-4-0-2  2.57 .921  2SO)
B+   Not a lot of change from the 1Q. Still solid as ever and really making a case for another NHL deal next season. As a fan, you know what you're going to get when DGM is in net and that's a great feeling to have. (B)

#30  Markstrom, Jacob  7-6-0-1  2.55GAA   .922%  2SO  (4-6-0-1 3.00 .902)
B+   Jacob is the #1 goalie and he's playing like it. Went through a stretch where he looked like the best goalie in the league. Still has the occasional off night, but show me a goalie that doesn't.  (C+)

Defense

#2  Caruso, Michael  20GP  0-0-0  -2  16PIM (12GP  1-3-4  +6  4PIM)
C+   This one hurts as Michael is my current favorite player on defense. What little offensive game he had, has disappeared and he has been just ok on defense. Might be a victim of being too good in the 1Q. (B+)

#3  Petrovic, Alex   19GP  1-5-6  +6  55PIM (16GP  2-4-6  E  12PIM)
A-   Alex has become the BMOC on this blueline since his benching in December. He has played with controlled aggression and is playing a mean and solid defensive game. This is what was missing in the 1Q. His defense has finally caught up with his offense. (C+)

#5  Strachan, Tyson 5GP  0-0-0  +2  4PIM (19GP  1-7-8  +1  18PIM)
Inc.  Played just 5 games before sustaining an upper body injury in December. Now off to the NHL, where he certainly deserves to be. (B)

#7  Lee, John  9GP  1-1-2  E  9PIM  (8GP  0-0-0  -4  2PIM)                         B-  After a very rookie like 1Q, Lee has settled in as a perfect 6th/7th D-man. Doesn’t make a lot of mistakes and most nights, you don’t know he’s out there. Which is a good thing for a stay at home d-man. Will need him to step it up if Caruso and/or Petrovic stay in Florida for any length of time. (Inc.)

#21 Mike Mottau  16GP   0-7-7   +5   6PIM   (None)
B   Came at a good time. His presence really seemed to settle down the young guys. Very smart player that made it look easy. Now with the Toronto organization.

#25  Robak, Colby  21GP 1-9-10 +1 24PIM (19GP 2-6-8 -3 16PIM)
B+   Has learned from his mistakes and now isn’t making the bad pinches or horrible passes he did early. Been very good moving the puck and has really stepped it up defensively. (C+)

#43  Yonkman, Nolan  21GP 0-5-5 -2 26PIM (19GP 0-1-1 -7 20PIM)
B-   After a tough 1Q, Yonkman has been better. Still playing decent defense and even got himself a little multi-game point streak! (C-)

Not graded: Brendon Nash (4 games)

Offense

#9  Hazen, Jonathan  21GP 1-5-6 -1 8PIM (3GP 0-0-0 -1 0PIM)
C-   Doesn’t really do anything good enough for me. Small and gets knocked around too easily. Indecisive with the puck and plays little to no defense. Honestly, his numbers are better than what I thought they would be, hence the C grade. (NG)

#10  Sim, Jon   18GP   6-6-12   +3   12PIM  (None)
B+   Been a nice addition to the Rampage. His leadership is evident and he really jump started the offense when he came on board. (NG)

#12  Gomes, Jared   21GP  3-5-8  +1  8PIM  (16GP  4-2-6  E  6PIM)
B+   This year’s Evan Barlow. Plays hard all the time, good with the puck and a nice forechecker. The fact that he has added some offense is just icing. (B)

#14  Jacques, J.F.   9GP 0-0-0  -5  5PIM  (15GP  5-2-7  +1  32PIM)
D   Le sigh. After a promising start, JFJ was benched because of the veteran rule after the Sim and Mottau signings. Hasn’t really found a spot since. With the Vet situation now cleared up, he could see more ice time and I expect a better second half. (B)

#15  Selleck, Eric   21GP  1-4-5  +1  65PIM  (19GP  2-3-5  +1  79PIM)
B    Another hard worker. He’s a scrapper that does his job. Nothing to complain about really. (B+)

#16  Deveaux, Andre   1GP  0-0-0  -1  0PIM  (15GP  4-3-7  -6  22PIM)
W    Le Sigh part Deux. One game since the last report card and that was last Sat. when the Rampage were down to a skeleton crew due to the lockout ending and injuries. He needs to go. He has quit on the team and it looks like they may have quit on him right back. Total bust signing. (D)

#17  Wellman, Casey   19GP  4-8-12GP  +5  4PIM  (14GP  2-6-8  -9  8PIM)
B    Where was this guy all season? Still goes through stretches where it looks like he’s floating, but he has been a top 3 forward on this team since coming back from his involuntary suit wearing days. (D)

#24  Howden, Quinton  21GP   4-4-8  +2  10PIM  (18GP  4-5-9  -3  6PIM)
B-    Starting to find his niche on this team, I think. I watch him and see his skill and have to remind myself he’s a 20 year old rookie. He’s learning and getting better. (C+)

#26  Rheault, Jon  21GP  7-6-13  +1  10PIM  (19GP  6-10-16  +2  4PIM)
B+    The only thing keeping Rheault from an A again is his tendency to completely disappear offensively for a couple games at a time. Very streaky scorer but still very good defensively. (A)

#27  Rallo, Greg  21GP  8-2-10  -3  6PIM  (19GP  5-4-9  -6  12PIM)
B-    Greg has become the team’s sniper getting big goals at big times. Playing solid on the PK as well. Needs to be better defensively 5 on 5. (C-)

#28  Wright, James  21GP  2-6-8  -1  23PIM  (19GP  3-6-9  -2  8PIM)
C+    Another guy that disappears for long stretches. Still, he’s a very good PK’er and a decent faceoff guy. Not a bad 2nd or 3rd line center to have in this league. (C-)

#32  Timmins, Scott  20GP  4-4-8  +3  20PIM  (19GP  2-2-4  -3  16PIM)
A-    Scott was playing the best hockey in 2 years before getting hurt last Friday. Stellar on the PK, good on the forecheck and even better backchecking. Does all the little things well. Players like Scott are huge assets to any hockey club. (B-)

#36  Shore, Drew  20GP  5-9-14  +4  8PIM  (19GP  5-10-15  E  10PIM)
A    Best player on the team night in and night out. Tenacious skater that refuses to coast. Plays well along the wall and has tremendous hockey sense and vision. He could see extended time in Florida this season depending on injuries and I think he’s up for good next fall. (A)

#39  Vaive, Justin  20GP  2-0-2  E  26PIM  (16GP  0-2-2  -1  12PIM)
C    Good 4th line plugger that will throw the big check and stand up for teammates. No complaints. (C)

Coaching
C   They have done an admirable job through this lockout making the most with what they've had. The PK is still efficient. The PP, however, is a giant mess most nights. The team is also quite bad on the road. The coaches need to be better at adjustments and deaing with having the second line change on the road.

Front Office
B+   They made a mistake with DeSantis and they fixed it by trading him for a more complementary player in Brendon Nash. They missed on the Deveaux signing and they brought in Jon Sim on an AHL deal. They haven't been perfect by any stretch, but they remedy mistakes and seem committed to putting a winner on the ice in San Antonio.
