The Rampage return to action after a hard fought 4-3 victory over division rival Oklahoma City on Thursday night. Bracken Kearns scored twice, including the eventual game winner, while Matthieu Beaudoin (3A) and Randy Robitaille (1-1-2) each picked up multiple point games. The key to the game was the clamping down defensively in the 3rd period. The Rampage allowed just 3 shots to the Barons in the final 20 minutes despite being outplayed for much of the period. The defense was doing a great job of keeping people out of the middle of the ice and pushing the Barons to the outside. Mathieu Brodeur and Nick Ross both added solid minutes to a depleted blue line corps. With Maxim Goncharov suspended, Michael Stone injured, Chris Summers in Phoenix on emergency recall, and Garrett Stafford leaving early in the 3rd due to injury, the young guys, along with Nolan Yonkman, Jonas Ahnelov, and Jeff May logged a ton of minutes. Considering he circumstances, I thought they played decent.
Tonight, the Rampage welcome the North Divsion leading Manitoba Moose to town for the final meeting of the season. The Rampage hold a 2-1 record vs the Moose this season, including an exciting 5-4 shootout victory way back in early December at the ATT Center. The Moose are led by outstanding rookie goalie Eddie Lack and up and coming RW Sergei Shirokov who has amassed 18 goals and 46 points in 61 games this season.
The Moose are coming off a very hard fought 2-1 shootout victory over Houston on Friday night (Thanks guys!) and the Rampage should have the fresher legs. The Rampage need to jump out early and be the aggressor. That said, the boys are battling the late season injury bug a bit right now. Ryan Hollweg (lower body), David Brine (flu), Michael Stone (upper body), and Garrett Stafford (upper body) are all day to day and, according to Dan Weiss, Stone is the most likely to play tonight. Meanwhile, Matt Climie is expected to get the start for the 14th consecutive game.
I'd like to apologize for the lack of game coverage for the OKC game on Thursday. I've had a crazy couple of days and I'm just now settling back into the groove. Fortunately, that groove involves Rampage hockey! See you all tonight. Until then, LETS GO RAMPAGE!!!
